ONIX JUN - IPOH'S LITTLE KOREAN GEM

Alright, I have to admit K-pop, K-drama isn't really my all time favourite things to indulge in. However, back in the 2000's I found myself deeply in love in 'Autumn in my Heart' (Oh ya, they have 2 names for different countries' positioning; 秋天的童话 / 蓝色生死恋). However, Korean food on the other hand, I love. =P

So, these recent years there are many Korean restaurants that blooming around Ipoh but not all survived the 'stingy economy' in Ipoh city, that's what my friends from the south labeled us Ipohian. But I gotta defend us here, Ipohian are anything but stingy. It's the small map of Ipoh, light traffic (used to be anyway) and foodie-tongue homosapiens that reside in the little gem of Perak that cause many restaurants that do not offer food that is worth-the-price or just located in a not-so-well-known place to close down as fast as they bloom.

We wanted something apart from DaoRae Korean BBQ, and after some browsing on the internet, we decided to try one of the recommended restaurant by motormouth. You can read about it here, http://www.j2kfm.com/dae-jang-gum-onix-jun-korean-restaurant-bandar-baru-medan-ipoh/
Onix Jun Korean Restaurant (大長今) was opened in 2008, when not every single teenager is a K-pop fan that are dying to have Korean Food. It is run by a Korean family (they are able to converse in Mandarin & English; how well I'm not so sure, I was pointing away all over the menu-[my universal language] & bowing politely all the time haha =P)

The signboard is not that fancy but the bright orange does help to stand out in the midst of the glaring lights from all other pubs and bars around it. At the corner of the same row you can find Nasmir Nasi Kandar, but that's about it, the rest of the shop lots are mostly offices. Opposite Onix Jun you can find The Browns Cafe (they have games such as Jenga & Uno; great place for a group of friends t catch up)& Sushi East (they serve Sushi at a fair price).

Banchan; fried sweet anchovies, blanch chinese spinach, hard boiled eggs, julienne potatoes & my fav Kimchi

The Romaine lettuce and the Spicy BBQ Pork is not the Banchan. It's one of those must try, the seasoning is so good, paired with Romaine lettuce and some rice, perfect!
They have absolutely one of the best Banchan in town. Banchan is small side dishes normally served alongside with rice. But don't worry, even if you opt for noodles and other menu instead, you'll still get the UNLIMITED Banchan. The KIMCHI has just the right amount of spiciness, sweetness and the tanginess needed to get our appetite going. Wait, I was famish even before I saw the Banchan.

Samgye-tang; Ginseng Chicken Soup

Man! The rice (it taste like glutinous rice) and the garlic and other spices stuff in the chicken was fabulous. The rice is soft but not too mushy. The soup is just nice. Just one complain, I can't really taste the ginseng in the soup.

I definitely forgotten the name of this dish, but i remembered it was beef and it was yummylicious with a bowl of rice.

Pa Jeon; Korean Pancakes

This is kind of a pass to me. The taste it's slightly too plain. You can opt for the Kimchi Jeon, I think that would be a better choice.

We also ordered the topokki (Korean fried rice cake) it's like a chewy rice noodle fried with scallions & cabbage. It's nice, the texture is nice, taste is just right and no complains.

We also had jjajangmyeon (noodles in blackbean sauce) & bibimbap (rice with mixed vegetable & meat) but so sorry, no pictures and the taste is also just a 5 out of 10. They lack somewhat a bursting flavour.

I didn't had the receipt for the pricing for all the dishes (misplaced it somewhere), but the bill comes up to RM250++ for the 6 of us. (Total of 4 main dishes and 4 side dishes & drinks)

That's all for now. I'm looking forward for the next visit maybe to try their Korean BBQ.
